Mifeprex (mifepristone) Tablets – Medical Use & Important Safety Information

Mifepristone is a prescription medication used for specific medical indications under strict medical supervision. It is most commonly used in combination with misoprostol for the termination of early pregnancy (up to 70 days) and is also approved for the management of hypercortisolism-related hyperglycemia in patients with Cushing’s syndrome.

How Mifepristone Works

Mifepristone works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is necessary to maintain the uterine lining during pregnancy. Without progesterone support, the uterus cannot sustain the pregnancy, and expulsion occurs after follow-up treatment with misoprostol.

In patients with Cushing’s syndrome, mifepristone helps control high blood sugar levels caused by excess cortisol when surgery is not possible or has failed.

Approved Uses

  • Medical termination of pregnancy up to 70 days, when used with misoprostol
  • Control of hyperglycemia in adults with Cushing’s syndrome

Dosage & Administration

For Termination of Pregnancy

  • Day 1: One 200 mg tablet of mifepristone taken orally
  • 24–48 hours later: 800 mcg of misoprostol (four 200 mcg tablets), placed in the cheek pouches
  • Follow-up with a healthcare provider is required within 7–14 days

For Hyperglycemia in Cushing’s Syndrome

  • Starting dose: 300 mg once daily with food
  • Maximum dose: up to 1200 mg per day, as prescribed by a doctor
